How to Change a PlexiDor Medium Spring

How to Change a PlexiDor Medium Spring
00:00:00:00 - 00:00:20:15 Unknown All right. Now we're going to remove the dog door from its install hole so we can change the spring. You just unscrew the four screws that hold the frame into the door of the glass unit, or the wall, and the dog door should pull out of the hole. Sometimes there has been a bit of caulk placed around the edge of the frame, and you will. 00:00:20:16 - 00:00:44:08 Unknown If that's the case, you're going to want to use a dull knife or utility knife to remove that and release the caulk so you can pull the dog door all the way out of the hole. This is our new spring cover. If you have an older unit, you may have a metal box cover. As you see here. The black one is the black round. 00:00:44:08 - 00:01:13:10 Unknown One is held in by a pin that you will remove with needle nose pliers. The metal box one is just unscrews so you can see the tea pin. You just turn it 90 degrees and it comes right out. Now here's your, nut driver that you'll use to, loosen the screw. 00:01:13:12 - 00:01:38:08 Unknown Now, you can remove this screw from the spring assembly, and the washer will come off. Take off this spring. And the pivot pin, the spring and all of the washers come off at the same time. And you can see that the panel came loose. There is the new spring, the new screw and the tooth washer. There's the bent arm. 00:01:38:10 - 00:02:01:12 Unknown You will be reusing the bent arm that you had originally. So there's how you can prop open the panel and now clean off the top of the frame. As long as you're doing this, go ahead and clean it off. Now you grab the pivot pin, and the pivot pin has a special shape on the bottom of it that sits right down into that brass rivet in the top of the panel. 00:02:01:12 - 00:02:33:09 Unknown So go through the frame and press the pivot pin down into that slot. Then take your shoulder washer, slide it over the pivot pin and push it down into the frame. Now take the tube washer. You will slide that over the pivot pin. Now you'll take the spacer washer. The gray nylon spacer washer that also will be put on over the white tube spacer. 00:02:33:09 - 00:03:06:19 Unknown And now the flat white washer will go out on again over the tube spacer. Now you take your spring noticing that you want to have the spring tail that cocks up slightly. You'll see that and you'll slide the spring over, and the spring tail that cocks slightly up will be positioned in front of that metal plate. So and now you'll grab the needle, nice nose pliers and grab the spring tail. 00:03:06:21 - 00:03:33:21 Unknown And you're going to twist it up and over that vertical plate that metal post. This is called charging the spring. This part can be a little tricky sometimes, but just bear with it. And once you've pushed it out, push the tail over the plate. Make sure you push down on the spring a little. It doesn't have to be in perfect position as long as that spring tail is over the vertical plate. 00:03:33:23 - 00:03:43:19 Unknown Now you will push down the bent arm and you'll see it has a special shape that snaps over the top of the. 00:03:43:21 - 00:04:18:15 Unknown The, pivot pin. Push it down securely, and that tail of that bent arm goes between the two spring arms. Now, you take your pliers and your nut driver, the screw and the internal washer. Put the internal washer over the screw. That helps you not to lose it, and then push the. You'll be pushing the screw in to the top of the hole in the pivot pin. 00:04:18:17 - 00:04:48:13 Unknown But while you do this, you're going to have your vise grips holding the bend to arm in place so that the spring assembly doesn't move, and then tighten. Using the nut driver, tighten down securely and tighten it until it's nice and secure. But you don't. You don't want to really ream down hard on it. You want it nice and snug. 00:04:48:15 - 00:05:25:07 Unknown So turn it snug and then maybe one more turn and and you should be good. But don't, don't really ream on that. You want it to be snug and secure, but you don't want to overtighten it. Now take the grease. If if you don't have the grease that we provided, you can use white lithium grease or any good, water resistant marine grease and brush the spring liberally with that grease that's going to help protect it, waterproof it, lubricate it. 00:05:25:09 - 00:05:59:13 Unknown And, you may want to also, while you're greasing this one, you may want to grease the other spring, even if you haven't replaced the the other spring. After you grease the spring, you're going to put a drop of three and one oil at the base of the pivot pin, and at the top where the screw goes through the spring assembly, and then down below at the pivot point, then replace your spring cover with the black abs cover you'll put it in, then you'll grab your needle nose pliers and the t pin. 00:05:59:15 - 00:06:17:17 Unknown Just slide it into the slot and turn at 90 degrees to secure the spring cover. If you have the old style aluminum box cover, you put it on and you will screw it in place. And now you're done. 00:06:17:19 - 00:06:58:02 Unknown So now let's make sure that the panel is centered by checking that the panel comes back each time to this spot between the two lock slots. You can see here. If you push on it, that panel stops between the lock slots. If it doesn't stop between the lock slot, you will simply loosen the screw the spring assembly screw and then use your vise grips or hold the panel and retighten it with the panel perfectly lined between the two lock slots. 00:06:58:04 - 00:06:59:08 Unknown And then you should be good.
