It is important to check the hurricane rating of a dog door before purchasing if you live in an area regularly affected by hurricanes. What makes a hurricane rated dog door? To make a hurricane rated dog door, you install a removable hurricane shutter over the dog door on the exterior.  Hurricane shutters are made in all kinds of custom sizes.  The hurricane shutter has been tested to be hurricane rated and stand up to the winds of a hurricane from 74 miles per hour on the low end and up to 156 miles per hour or more. This would make the dog door hurricane rated. If you expect extreme weather, lock your PlexiDor Dog Door and attach the security plate. While the PlexiDor panels are designed to open at a gentle touch, the springs can keep them closed at wind speeds up to 30 miles per hour. If you expect any type of extreme weather with winds stronger than this, your pets shouldn't be unsupervised outside. Securing the door is the best for both your home and your pets. Include your pets in your emergency plans and never leave them alone behind - they depend on you. In summation, the PlexiDor Dog Door does not qualify as a hurricane rated dog door due to the lack of an external cover. However, it will keep the weather out in winds up to 30 miles per hour. Brazilian Terriers are known for being intelligent and alert with an abundance of energy. They love to play, bark, dig, bark, romp around, and dig some more. A: The Boerboel This breed stems back to the 17th century when settlers brought dogs from their home countries. The environment was unfriendly without veterinarians or medicines, and only the largest and strongest dogs survived. This resulted in a hardy and versatile breed known for being protective, intelligent, and eager to please the family. A typical Boerboel is confident, calm, and devoted to its humans. They can be aloof with strangers, but are playful and affectionate with the owners – most dogs of this breed would like to spend their entire lives playing fetch. These dogs are gentle with children they know, and often allow children to get away with behaviors other breeds would not tolerate. They also do well with other dogs, cats, and pets. As all working breeds, the dogs are intelligent. Like all dogs, they require socialization, training, and exercise, but few other breeds covet attention like this one does. Today, many countries have outlawed the practice of docking a dog’s tail – it is considered cruelty to animals. The Boerboel traditionally had a docked tail to protect it from agile baboons and other animals that might attack and get an advantage through grabbing the tail. A: The Bouvier des Flandres Early individuals were quite dissimilar and sizes and colors varied. They had enough in common to be called Bouviers, but it took quite a while before the breed reached a conform look. The different types had sometimes funny names, like Vuilbaard, which means “Dirty Beard.” Bouviers were very popular up until World War I, but the war devastated the areas where the dogs were bred. Most of the dogs found themselves on their own as their families died or fled, but a few families managed to stay in the area and keep their dogs until the war was over. The breed is steady, resolute, and fearless, and make great family friends and guardians. They excel at herding, obedience, agility, and tracking. Being a large working breed, the dogs need lots of exercise and something to do. They’re fairly calm indoors, but still do better in the countryside or a suburb than a city – they love to have room to run. Depending on the individual, a Large of Extra Large PlexiDor will be the right size dog door for a Bouvier des Flandres.
