American Eskimo

In spite of the name, the American Eskimo is a German dog. It was originally called German Spitz, but the breed received a new name after the First World War. The Eskie is a popular watchdog and companion who also excels as circus performer. The Medium PlexiDor dog door is suitable for most American Eskimos.

The American Eskimo looks a lot like a Samoyed or a Japanese Spitz. Don’t let the similarities in appearance fool you; this breed has a completely different temper. They were originally bred to guard property and people, and they can be valiant watchdogs when the occasion calls for it. They are devoted to their family and don’t like to be left alone.

Regular exercise is a must since these dogs can be energetic. They need to vent their energy and use their busy minds. The thick coat does shed, and requires regular brushing and bathing.

There are three sizes: toy, which normally weigh around ten lbs, miniature, which weigh around 20 lbs, and standard which weighs around thirty pounds.

The PlexiDor Medium is the right size dog door for American Eskimoes.
