Finnish Spitz

The Finnish Spitz, or Suomenpystykorva, is the national dog of Finland. They’re often used for hunting moose and even bears, but were originally bred for hunting birds and small game. Females weigh between 15 and 22 lbs, and males between 26 and 28 lbs, which makes a PlexiDor Medium Dog Door a perfect match!

Suomenpystykorva are intelligent, lively, quick, and friendly. They love spending time with the family and being active. They get along well with other dogs and they’re known for loving children.

The breed developed from selectively bred Spitz-type dogs that inhabited central Russia thousands of years ago. Small clans of woodsmen relied on their dogs to help them obtain food, and the dogs developed excellent hunting abilities.

Being a barking hunting dog, they bark at anything out of the ordinary, and a Finnish Spitz can bark up to 160 times a minute. Their country of origin hosts barking competitions. While they can be trained to bark less, the tendency makes them wonderful watch dogs.

The Finnish Spitz is a healthy breed with an average life span of 11-14 years.

The PlexiDor Medium is the right size dog door for a Finnish Spitz.
